FAITH

FAITH

Here is Merriam-Webster’s simple  definition of faith:                                                               A strong belief or trust in someone or something. or                                                                   A belief in the existence of God : strong religious feelings or beliefs.

SEAN DOBBINS

A STRONG BELIEF OR TRUST IN SOMEONE

Last week  I listened to the great bandleader Sean Dobbins when he brought his Organ Quartet to the Dirty Dog. This was not the same kind of organ music that I am used to hearing on Sunday at the church I attend just down the road from the Dog. On some Sundays we have such surety that God is listening that we only have to whisper.

When I have heard organ played with the same spirit as Sean’s group, I have had to attend those churches which have a congregation that feel a need to shout a little louder to get God’s attention. For many jazz players their introduction to free spirited music comes well before getting their first taste of jazz.

Sean’s Organ Quartet didn’t hold back. They had something to say and it was sure easy to hear their message. The uplifting music seamed  effortless but it was the result of hard work, a confidence in their preparation and a trust in each other. The stronger the trust the stronger the band

YOU HAVE TO HAVE FAITH

What differentiates jazz from other forms of music is the willingness to go in new directions on the fly. Going headlong into the unknown requires faith in your own ability and faith in the ability of the guy next to you. It requires the bandleader to have faith in a vision. Trust turns out to be the glue that holds all the best prepared pieces of the jazz puzzle together. When faith produces great music you can see the results in the in the artists’ eyes and occasional grins.

AN ESSENTIAL INGREDIENT: TRUST

At the Dirty Dog we take for granted that a capable well trained staff will  serve us a wonderfully prepared meal and drinks at the appropriate time in a carefully lit, comfortable room.  When Chef André  places the plate on the tray he is pretty sure that each meal that is served is as good as it can be and will be served in a timely way. Unseen in the kitchen is one of the most important ingredients, teamwork.  A lot of hands are at work behind the scene in a crowded kitchen and the only thing that binds their efforts is their earned trust in each other and yes a little faith.
